Why
Major in finance?
Individuals, businesses,
and organizations, both large and small, are continually
earning or raising money to spend and invest. Finance
is the study of this process.
Finance
has three major areas of focus:
Investments
examine the allocation of wealth at both personal
and institutional levels to produce greater wealth
in the future. A keen understanding of risk and return,
diversification, portfolio allocation and the securities
markets are demanded.
Financial
Markets and Institutions defines the
functions of markets and institutions in the global
financial arena. Markets such as the New York Stock
Exchange along with Institutions such as Banks and
Mutual Funds play a key role in transferring resources
from those that have money to those with ideas that
may produce additional wealth.
Corporate
Financial Management is the financial
decision making process undertaken by management to
maximize the wealth of the firm owners (stockholders).
Key areas of focus include: the evaluation of projects
to be undertaken by the firm, the acquisition of funds
to undertake profitable projects, the analysis of
performance of the firm with recommendations on improvement.
Finance majors graduate
with a financial knowledge base that crosses all industries
and job titles. The program provides quantitative
rigor and skills required to make complex financial
decisions in a dynamic economy.
